Background:
MMSC Consultancy was established to study based on the case study given, why grounding system failed to provide protection and had caused a physical damaged to commercial and residential building. This project is under supervision of Prof. Hussien Ahmad, director of IVAT from UTM Malaysia.
MMSC Consultancy member's:
1. Mohd Hayriel Salim (TL)
2. Chong Kiat Shiu
3. Siti Aishah Bakar
4. Mariam Mat Saad
All members are currently pursuing a Master in Electrical Engineering.
Objective of the assignment:
1. To investigate why Franklin Rod failed to capture the lightning.
2. Explanation on edge surface is more prone to lightning strike.
3. Based on the study, to provide a recommendation to avoid the repeated fault.
Strategies:
1. To do measurement on the grounding system.
2. To check soil resistivity at the location.
3. To indentify class of protection installed on the building using angle of protection and rolling sphere.
4. To investigate the root cause that reduces the effectiveness of the Franklin Rod. i.e: copper degradation and cable theft.

Salam
I would like to congratulate you all for posting the assignment in the blog. However there are few things that I would like you to add i.e we would like to study not only the failure of Franklin Rod but also the ESE Lightning terminal. So make some efforts to hunt buildings' damages due to lightning even though Franklin Rods are still installed on the building tops. The photographs that I gave u majorityof the buildings that are installed with non conventional Lightning air terminal. For some clue, kindly survey buildings belong to the s UPM, UKM, UM,ITM and other institutions. The old buildings are normally using conventional rods for lightning protection.
I can get the contractor, but he want us to provide the following the informations.
ReplyDelete1. Schedule of work (day, time & location)
2. Work implementation
i) to measure present earthing system soil resistivity or
ii) to implement our own temperory earthing system & soil resistivity measurement
3. Coordination with the person of various parties to carry out the work.
We can go together with the contractor, under his supervision lets us perform the measurement.
ReplyDeleteCan you check how much we should pay, perhaps by day and how many persons involve. thanks.
I can go to take measurement on this coming saturday. Can I know where and when should we meet? Do I have to bring along any tools and instrument to the site? Thank You.
